One of the newest additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe lineup, Luke Cage is a NetFlix original series that kicked off in September of 2016. The series introduced the titular character, Luke Cage, better known by his superhero name “Power Man“.
Power Man was an African American comic book character created by Archie Goodwin and John Romita in 1972 when blaxploitation films emerged in America as a popular new fad. Unable to maintain a series by itself, his character was later paired with another commercially weak Marvel comic book character named “Iron Fist“. The two went on to become one of the top crime fighting duos in the Marvel Universe, simply known as “Power Man & Iron Fist”.
English Study Points!
The good thing about this Netflix series is that it not only introduces a new Marvel Character, but it also introduces the viewer to African-American culture, music, and slang vocabulary as it is used on a day-to-day basis.
Most Japanese students have trouble understanding American slang and it`s usage, but since most slang originated from Afro-American roots, then this series offers a good entry point into that culture (with lots of action and ass-kicking to boot)!
Either way, the story is good and fairly easy to follow. The characters each have their own interesting and intriguing background stories to follow. This series doesn`t have too much of a complex plot at the moment, so I would give this a 2-star rating in terms of language difficulty. Also, you`ll find that a lot of the native English narrative is comparatively slower than other TV shows or movies. They probably do this to set a “Motown-style-blues-groove” that contrast nicely with the environment and intense action sequences, but in the end, it does make the conversations easier for non-native speakers to pick up and listen to.
Highly worth checking out, in my opinion, so give it a watch and tell me what you think!
